How are trees relevant in the climate battle? Should we be planting a million trees?
The City of Cape Town announced the completion of the Best Practice Guideline for Trees on Monday. Trees are promoted in the guideline as important for mitigating the heat island effect created by roads and buildings and for carbon capture and oxygen production, amongst other eco-services.
Controversially, Cape Town-based Professor Emeritus William Bond, says planting trees will not solve the climate crisis. His voice is amongst a cohort of scientists who believe that governments have been misled by the Global North into planting millions of trees.
How are trees relevant in the climate battle is therefore an important question. Should we be aiming to plant a million trees? Or not?
