The landscape design for the Central Gardens at the University of Mpumalanga’s focuses on integrating and connecting the open spaces located between three newly built buildings and existing irrigation ponds. The design for the R 8 388 763.13-valued landscape is consistent with the campus urban design framework that establishes the campus structure. The open spaces are connected using paved walkways of which the grand central staircase and ramp connection are the most prominent. This feature is framed by planting beds to create a focal point to the quadrangle. The planting and walkways soften the irrigation ponds with cantilevered timber seating pods provide seating areas along the water’s edge. The integration of universal access was an important informant to the design, as was the need to create cool walkways for the hot summer climate. The latter is achieved by introducing shade trees to open spaces, streetscapes and circulation areas.

Trees are also used as structuring elements to frame vistas, views, and open lawn areas where gathering is envisaged. Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems are applied to the stormwater management plan that was coordinated with the civil engineer and integrated into the landscape design. A key part of the stormwater management plan are planting beds located along the roadside. These act as swales and attenuate and filter stormwater before directing it into planters on either side of the grand staircase. From this location, excess water drains into a conventional storm water system.
