Upper Liesbeek River Park
Bishops Court, Cape Town

The Upper Liesbeek River Park is one of Cape Town’s best kept secrets. Hidden just below Kirstenbosch, the park has been developed over the last ten years by Dr. Joan Parker, a resident living in the area. Through her vision work, the park has gone from strength to strength and is an ongoing project that evolves every time one visits.

Through donations from the public and funding raised through the Lottery, it has been possible to transform a wasteland into a very popular park for picnics, birthday parties and family gatherings. As one of the few places in Cape Town where the river water quality is sufficiently good for human contact, it is a great place for children to safely play in the flowing water.

At this time of the year, the banks of the river are dappled with bright orange clivias that signal the beginning of spring.

The numerous seating areas are dotted around the park and because of their popularity, must be booked in advance for weekend functions.
